Why we put our bathroom lamps through a “steam torture test”

Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and constant moisture hanging in the air.
If we just tested these lamps on a dry workbench and called it a day, they’d fail the moment a customer took a hot shower. That’s why we put every single batch of our infrared heaters through a damp-heat aging test. It’s basically a stress test to see what breaks before it ever reaches your home.
The weak spot
Most of these heaters use quartz halogen tech. Now, quartz is fantastic for moving heat, but there’s a catch. The spot where the wires enter the glass? That’s the danger zone.
If the seal isn’t perfect, moisture sneaks in. Once that water vapor hits the tungsten filament, it’s game over. The filament oxidizes, thins out, and snaps.
To stop that from happening, we throw the lamps into a controlled chamber that mimics years of bathroom steam. We blast them with heat, then soak them in humidity, over and over. If a seal is going to fail, we want it to happen on our floor, not in your ceiling.
It’s not just the water—it’s the shock
Think about the physics here. A lamp goes from room temperature to 1000°C in a few seconds, then gets hit by a cloud of steam. That’s a massive shock to the system.
We watch for two things: glass cracks and rusty connectors. When contacts start to corrode, the resistance goes up. That makes the base of the lamp run way too hot, which is how you end up with a melted housing or a tripped circuit breaker. Not a great way to start your morning.
The trade-off
Here’s the thing: these tests slow us down. They add time to our production line and make our lead times longer.
But the alternative? A mountain of returns and unhappy customers. You can’t exactly “quick-fix” a burnt-out filament once it’s installed ten feet up in a ceiling.
We’d rather take the hit on speed now to make sure these things actually hold up in the real world.
