You know those old-school bathroom lamp warmers? The ones that barely take the chill off the air? We’re seeing a huge shift away from those. Most people are moving toward IP65-rated infrared heaters, and for a good reason. Standard units just aren’t built for the kind of steam and direct spray you get in a modern wet-room.
Let’s talk about the “IP65” thing
In plain English, IP65 means the heater is dust-tight and can handle water jets hitting it from any angle. Here’s the problem with basic heaters: steam is sneaky. It gets inside the casing, hits the electrical terminals, and—boom—you’ve got a short circuit or a burnt-out element. By sealing these infrared units tight, we keep the moisture out. It’s mostly about safety. You don’t want to be worrying about leakage currents when you’re standing in a puddle of water.
The magic of infrared (and why it feels better)
Old heaters try to warm up the air. But if you have high ceilings or a loud exhaust fan running, that warm air just vanishes. It’s a waste of energy. Infrared is different. It doesn’t bother with the air; it sends out radiation that hits you and your surroundings directly.You feel the heat the second you turn it on. We use quartz or halogen elements to make this happen. They ramp up almost instantly. You don’t have to wake up 20 minutes early just to pre-heat your bathroom before a shower. You just flip the switch and get warm.
The tricky parts
Of course, making something waterproof comes with its own headaches. To get that IP65 rating, you need thick gaskets and tight seals. But if you seal it too tight without the right venting, the unit can overheat. We have to be really picky about the housing materials so they don’t warp under the heat. If a seal warps, the waterproof protection is gone. One more thing: don’t just plug these into a random outlet. These units pull way more power than a light bulb. You’ll need a dedicated circuit. If you don’t, you’ll likely spend your winter tripping the circuit breaker every time you want a warm bath. And please, make sure it’s grounded properly. In a bathroom, that’s just common sense.
